Work-Life-Balance by way of Achievement & Principle

If done right work-life-balance is best achieved by achievement.  Sounds contradictory to those out there who are making lots of money and never see their kids…right? Well, that’s because they have used their achievements -their money to create less time.  It’s not achievement alone, rather achievement grounded in principle.  If we set a principle for how we spend our money it would change our lives.

So try this on for size as a principle to live by with your achievements (your money): For any large purchases I will ask myself this question, “will this purchase create more time for me with my family, or less time over this next year.” If I cannot honestly say yes, and it is not a necessity, I do not buy it. Living by this principle generates more time and fosters simplicity and simplicity of spending generates balance.  What is your principle for your money?

How Entrepreneurs work-life balance differs

Self discipline is the key for the entrepreneur.  Without it the entrepreneur can ride a slippery slope into divorce, isolation, depression…the list goes on.  However, I find the difference (between work-life balance of the employee and the entrepreneur) is best stated by the amount of control the individual has in their work.  An entrepreneur can have a tremendous amount of control.  Most people have a picture of the overworked 24-7 entrepreneur wearing several hats, multitasking with smoke coming out their ears and their hair on fire.  This happens-and for a variety of reasons.

But I have coached independent professionals and entrepreneurs who have discovered much greater balance than some employees.  It requires some very strategic disciplined behaviors (which I coach them on).  But mostly (s)he has the ability to set the rules.  (S)he can decide how much debt to take on, create the appropriate boundaries, choose how big to let the organization get or not get, and decide which customers to dump because they’re an energy drain on the team.  All of that is possible if they hang on to control.  Where I find people get into trouble; both entrepreneurs and employees/executives is when they become a slave to the lender.  Too much debt and false optimism -that is when they loose control, and loose work-life balance.

Just as an employee who was solely dependent upon one income stream (their job) an entrepreneur can fall into trouble and get out of control.  But this control if utilized effectively (and if done in right proportion) it can actually give the entrepreneur much more balance than the employee who often is taking orders from the boss.  Of course we know that the customer is the boss of the entrepreneur.  And the customer can end up steering the ship if the entrepreneur is not careful.  In more difficult situations the entrepreneur can also have another boss: the venture capitalist or bank, and that can be much more disruptive to work-life balance than the boss.  One has to choose very wisely who to bring into the finances and how to spend their capital, otherwise control slips away and thus work-life balance as well.  Interested in talking more on the benefits of running a debt free business email me dave@conversionconsulting.net for more info.

Energy Money & Time

I recently responded to the question “what is the best work-life balance tip you could give?”  Of course when you coach people for a living on work-life balance you realize that it is not a simple answer.  But I will do my best to try.  Here it is, proportionalize your energy, time and money.  How so? Read on…

Let every decision you make about how to spend your energy, time, and money be decided by whether or not there is an expected proportional increase in your energy, time, and/or money. {Energy time and money in that order, energy being the most important.}

At the same time make your decisions in line with your vision and values. Never violate your values for an increase in energy, time or money, and seek not to stray far off your visions path. Keeping the majority of your time focused and pointed toward your customized vision typically mobilizes your energy which in turn creates balance – or at least the perception of what balance is to you. Energy finds ways to create time and balance. Money has the capacity to create time but more often than not I find people use money to take away time (i.e. getting too deep in debt) and thus it drains their energy.  Of course money management and time management are important but energy management is of even greater importance.  Find the best way to manage your energy and you will feel balanced.  More on energy, money management, and creating a vision in future blogs, stay tuned…

Balanced on the wrong things

There is nothing so ineffective as efficiently accomplished work that should never have been accomplished. It is easy to feel productive because we are “doing” work. But not all work should be done. Busy work often makes us feel good about ourselves but does nothing to impact the bottom line of the organization…or as a matter of fact of our own being. What good is busy work anyways? Isn’t it just like face time? In this economy what matters is doing work that makes a difference, an impact, a change for the good. Beware of the illusion of feeling balanced when you are not providing real value. So I leave you with the question, what good is feeling balanced if you are doing the wrong things to begin with? Isn’t that in and of itself out of balance?

Increasing Family Balance while traveling…it can happen

So I have found the key to family balance is to utilize every waking second when I am away from my family to get work done. You see I own my own business so there is always a ton of work to get done and really not enough time to do it in.

Recently, I had one of my most productive business trips under my principle: If I am away from my family I will: work like heck to get more work done than when I am home, and two, make sure my wife and kids are with family while I am gone (extended family).

I decide to break balance in the short term because it actually increases my long term balance (my family balance when I get back home).  When I get home I have less work to accomplish because I did twice the amount of work while I was gone.  This allows me extra time to hang out with the family and extra play time with the kids.  Sacrificing the short term for the long term is what it is all about.

We cannot manage time.  What we can manage is how much we choose to do and choose not to do during that time.  And yes we can manage when we do things.  So I choose during the away time; in the airplane, in the cab, bus, hotel room.  Wifi internet, a laptop, cell phone and my Franklin Covey planner -that is all I need. Of course I could sit back on my business trips and say I need some “me time”…that’s true, but then when I get back home I have twice the amount of work to do and all my kids want to do is play…that is when balance is off.

Inspiration for Fathers

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I came across a quote the other day by Olive Goldsmith who said “people seldom inspire when they have no other model but themselves to copy after.” Who do you draw your inspiration from? I would love to hear what people have to say. I have been doing life coaching for the past four and a half years and I see more and more people who had hoped to draw inspiration from their fathers…yet it has not happened. For one reason or another, their father was not the one to inspire them. Why as fathers do we fail to inspire? Are we too focused on making money, too focused on just keeping our job? Or are we just uncomfortable in our own skin and don’t know how to lead our kids to be comfortable in theirs? My great inspiring influence once said that he makes all things new. That he would help me to shed my old skin so I could truly live. He has fulfilled his promise and he keeps fulfilling his promise to me. To all you fathers out there – it is time to shed the old ways of doing things and allow yourself to be inspired by your father – your father who makes all things new.

Humility creates balance

Asking for help.   For some reason we men really don’t like to do this.  We men have to admit that the women have us licked on this one. They are not afraid to ask. Think about it…directions, fixing the car,…you name it we are usually not so quick to ask for help.  When I became a life coach I learned a valuable lesson that the more I ask, and the more I listen, the more I grow.  Growth is just one benefit though, I also save a dramatic amount of time.  It’s amazing how much time we spend feeding our own egos.  Why do people feel they have to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps?  Why do we go to great lengths to figure out something that was in front of us all along.  The faster you ask the faster you get things done.  Just make sure you’re asking the right person.

Conversations that go long

At the end of a meeting when you are making your cordial goodbye and thank you (and you have 5 minutes to get where you are going) do not give the conversation extending ”oh yeah and by the way…”.  If you know you have another meeting or project…or anything to be at - don’t add that last thing you forgot to tell them earlier.  You can  always email, text, instant message, fax, or call them later.

If you forgot it to begin with chances are it was not a priority A item…move on, it can wait.  When you extend the conversation to share that last tidbit you are saying to the other person(s) in the room that it is okay if you are late, or go off schedule.  They will take that as cue that they can do the same.  They will also take that as a cue for future meetings.  Protect your time by letting the conversation (and meetings) naturally end.

Snoozaholic

Have you become a snoozaholic? When the alarm goes off in the morning do you hit snooze once, twice, three times…? If so you might be a snoozaholic. You see when we decide when to get up in the morning we make a commitment to ourselves. That commitment is broken when we hit snooze. Broken commitments begin to tear us down and create internal conflict that creates a lack of trust in our being. When we start to loose trust in ourselves we don’t believe in ourselves. Loosing that belief in yourself is extremely self destructive. If you are starting the day out by lying to yourself, once, twice, or three times then you are setting yourself up for more broken commitments. It is true each and every person has the capacity to shift out of this during the course of the day – and some do. However, why start the day lying to yourself? It is like taking 2 steps backward just so you can get caught up before you become productive – and I am not even talking about the lost time from sleeping longer. Create new habits by promising to be honest with yourself about when you are going to wake up in the morning. You can’t change the past but you can change the way your tomorrow looks. Before you go to bed be realistic about when you are going to get up – then do it. See what happens when you start to believe in yourself.

Shift Quickly so You can Save a Victim

Saving time is impossible.  Let’s face it you cannot save it.  But wasting time can be curbed.  I find that many people waste tons of time wavering over decisions.  Or worse yet, sulking over bad past decisions.  Perfectionism is one of the culprits but so is playing the “victim”.

Bad decisions have to be let go.  The most successful people in life took great risks – and sometimes those risks proved to be horrible decisions.  However, their response to those decisions is what defined their legacy.  They quickly changed and made new decisions to replace the old.  It is when we allow ourselves to fall into the desires for pity (and consoling) that we start drifting away from effective behavior.  We become a drain on energy and attention instead of a source of it.  When really what we need to do is just move on.  Learn from the mistake and save the victim behavior for those that actually are victims.  Self victimization eats up not only your time but the time of everyone around you.  It is like a virus that destroys people and companies from the inside out.  Shift away from it quickly and you will save yourself and your associates hours of time.
